The Jeju economy has traditionally been supported by primary industry, agriculture, and fishing, but tourism has taken a more and more important role as the island receives ten million visitors per year. In 2017, a mind-boggling 64,991 flights shuttled between the capital, Seoul, and the volcanic island an hour away.
Jeju province has become a popular destination for tourists and commercial developers. Tourists are enticed to travel to Jeju for a number of reasons, including the island’s proximity to China just a two-hour flight from Beijing.
Jeju’s policy of allowing foreigners to travel to Jeju without a visa and the willingness of Jeju officials to grant foreign condominium owners permanent resident status. Because of these attractive policies, the presence of foreign citizens on Jeju has increased dramatically.
Just off the coast of South Korea, Jeju Island pulls in vacationers and honeymooners by the thousands.
Jeju is known for its beach resorts and volcanic landscape of craters and cavelike lava tubes. Hallasan Mountain, a dormant volcano, features hiking trails, a crater lake at the 1,950m summit and nearby Gwaneumsa Temple. The Geomunoreum Lava Tube System includes 7km-long Manjanggul Cave, created centuries ago when Hallasan was still active.
